Maths News
We have explored lots of practical maths in a number of Year 6 lessons recently, from creating our own games of chance and analysing the results, to deriving the formula for the area of a circle using… cheese triangles!
Practical learning like this is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to explore and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts as well having the opportunity to make great progress as independent learners. The benefits of which include improved academic performance as well as increased engagement and motivation.
In Years 7 and Top Form our pupils are at the ‘top’ of the school and are encouraged to develop their expertise in this area. So, what better way to prepare than beginning the process of embedding those skills in Year 6. Oh, and it’s fun too!
Congratulations to the following pupils who were successful in the recent UKMT Junior Maths Challenge:

Shakespeare Success for Felix
Congratulations to Felix Maxwell, our grand finalist for the Performing Shakespeare Competition by English Speaking Union.
He’ll be representing Beechwood at The Globe on 24t June.
Felix performed a monologue from Shakespeare’s The Tempest and wowed the judges at the Regional Final at Haberdashers’ School, beating seven other contestants from other local schools.
Out of a total of 120 performers nationally, Felix will be one of just 15 performing at the Globe.
What an incredible achievement, well done Felix!
Top Form Drama
In Top Form Drama Elliot, Kai, Adam & Freddie devised a piece inspired by this painting. You can watch their drama piece here
From the Science Labs
It has been a busy week in the labs this week for Senior Department pupils.
Year 6 have been learning about the “proper” names for different human bones, and investigating blood – they even “made” a large bottle of blood! They also walked around as blood cells to learn more about their functions.
Year 7 have been learning what happens in the chloroplast during photosynthesis.
